The choir began back in 1984, when policeman Howard Hughes — who had previously been with the Budleigh Salterton Male Voice Choir — transferred to Ilfracombe. He combined his idea to raise a male voice choir in the town, with the talents of musical director Margaret Vaughan . . . and the rest is history.
Jan Cross, who joined as musical director in 1991 said the choir has gone from strength to strength: "Though small numerically, the choir has a good mature sound and can be found most weeks of the summer season — and right up to Christmas Eve — entertaining and fund raising in local hotels and pubs. The choir also performs more formal concerts to help groups raise funds for their own causes, and each October, we join with different choirs, to celebrate our anniversary”.
And if you've always fancied the idea of joining a choir, Ilfracombe MVC meets to practise on Tuesdays at 7.30pm in the Guild Room of Emmanuel Church, on the seafront in Ilfracombe — and is always pleased to welcome new voices.
